Prepare your voice for the studio session

A clean vocal track rarely appears by accident in the booth. What you do in the days before — and what you skip — saves studio time and keeps takes usable.

Define the goal and files

Before you book Mugwetkyro, agree on song structure, tempo and a reference tone. Send an instrumental as WAV or AIFF without heavy bus compression, plus a rough guide vocal if you have one. If the backing track is a low-quality download, we cannot undo that damage in the session — check rights and level first.

For Vocals & Voice, many artists use €185 per song (up to three hours with engineer) or €95 when the project is open-ended. Half-day blocks of four hours are €420. Tell us which fits; we usually reply within 2 business days.

The week before

Your voice responds to sleep, humidity and load. Avoid club nights, shouting over noise and marathon rehearsals without breaks in the seven days before recording. If you gig live, spread loud parts across short sessions instead of cramming everything the day before.

Lock the lyrics: print them with breath marks, emphasis and sections where you want ad-libs. Rap and spoken word benefit as much as pop from a fixed text — rewriting between takes burns budget. Loop the instrumental until entries and breaks feel automatic.

The day before

Sleep is the cheapest processor. A short night shows up in pitch, stamina and patience — yours and ours. Alcohol dries mucous membranes; very spicy or heavy evening meals can trigger reflux that you feel in the throat next morning.

Pack deliberately: water bottle, lyrics, charged phone or tablet, instrumental on USB or a download link you already tested, optional favourite headphones. Check travel and hours: U3 Neubaugasse station, Siebensterngasse exit — about three minutes on foot to Siebensterngasse 19. Bus line 13A stops at Neubaugasse / Burggasse (around five minutes on foot). — Monday to Friday 10:00–20:00, Saturday 10:00–16:00, closed on Sunday.. Arriving calm beats sprinting from the U3.

On session day

Drink room-temperature water through the day; chugging right before the booth rarely helps the folds in time. Many singers react to dairy and very sweet drinks with thicker mucus — learn what bothers you and skip it two to three hours ahead.

Eat lightly about two hours before: banana, soup or simple bread with avocado gives energy without blocking the diaphragm. Moderate caffeine is fine for most voices; large doses right before a take can affect pulse and fine control.

Warm up and protect the voice

Start with the body: shoulders, neck, jaw. Then breath: long steady exhales on s or f. Sirens on ng, lip trills and quiet glissandi wake the voice without pushing. Ten to fifteen minutes is enough; extended warm-ups right before take one are rarely needed.

Do not open with the highest chorus. Sing a mid-range section first and climb. For speech and rap: slow tongue twisters, then faster — clear articulation saves editing time later in Podcast & Post-production if dialogue is part of the project.

In the booth at Mugwetkyro

Our Wien Neubau studio has 2 treated booths and 14 preamps — enough headroom for pop, rap and spoken formats. The control room offers 8 headphone sends if guests or production need to listen.

Set the headphone mix before you hunt for the “perfect” take. Too loud → you sing under the level you imagine; too quiet → you push. Many singers remove one earcup to hear themselves in the room — tell us and we adjust level and bleed. Keep about a hand’s width to the pop filter and step back slightly on loud peaks.

Breaks are not failure. Ten minutes quiet and water beats an hour of tired retakes. Cancellation and deposit rules are in our terms and conditions; free rescheduling is possible up to 7 days before the date.

What we prepare

After your enquiry we build the session: tempo, markers, routing into the booth. We pick microphones for your voice and genre — often a quick A/B before the main pass. During recording we flag takes so you focus on performance, not file names.

We store project files for 24 months after wrap; extension is only on request. If the voice tires earlier than planned, we move hard sections or book a short follow-up — a fresh day beats a exhausted comp.

For band budgets see band recording budget planning. Data handling is explained in the privacy policy.

Takeaway checklist

  • Final lyrics, uncompressed instrumental, optional guide.
  • Rested, hydrated, light meal two hours ahead.
  • No alcohol the night before; skip dairy if it affects you.
  • Body, breath, then voice — ten to fifteen minutes warm-up.
  • Headphone mix and mic distance before serious takes.
  • Plan breaks; if pain or hoarseness persists, see a clinician and move the date.
